July 21, 2013

Naught but ash can rise from ashes;
naught but dust can rise from dust.
What are we but living dust;
what are we but living ash?
Hair and bone and thinking flesh—
earth and god within our skin.
Rise as ash from ashen hills,
rise as dust from dusty plains,
stand against the burning sun;
for what can rise from fire but smoke?
